Limassol has five main hospitals worth knowing: two large private general hospitals, one public general hospital, a specialist cancer centre, and Cyprus's largest private rehabilitation centre. All five are connected to GESY, Cyprus's national health system, in some form. Here's how they compare, and what to check before you need one.

What is GESY, and does it matter when choosing a hospital?

GESY (the General Health System) is Cyprus's national health insurance scheme. If you're a contributing resident, GESY covers treatment at any hospital connected to it, public or private, at little or no extra cost beyond a small registration fee. If you're not yet a contributor, for example if you've just relocated or you're visiting, ask about self-pay rates or check your private and travel insurance before treatment.

All five hospitals below are connected to GESY in some form, most as full participants, Limassol General as the public backbone of the system. That said, GESY coverage, waiting times, and which specialists are available under GESY versus privately can all vary by hospital. Founded in 1983, Ygia is Cyprus's first and largest private hospital, with 188 beds and 8 operating theatres. It joined GESY in September 2023. Ygia is the only private hospital in Cyprus with a dedicated Paediatric and Paediatric Surgery department, alongside a baby-friendly Maternity department, worth knowing if you're moving with young children or planning to have one in Cyprus. It's centrally located, a short walk from Limassol's seafront.

Limassol General Hospital

The public hospital for Limassol district, with a 24-hour Accident & Emergency department (18 beds), an Intensive Care Unit, and outpatient and inpatient care across the standard range of public specialties. As a public GESY hospital, it's the default option for residents without private insurance, and the only one of the five with a dedicated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for premature or unwell newborns. It's located on Nikaias Street in Kato Polemidia.

German Medical Institute (formerly German Oncology Center)

Opened in November 2017 as the German Oncology Center, this specialist cancer hospital has since rebranded as the German Medical Institute (GMI), though it's still widely known by its original name. It focuses on cancer diagnosis and treatment: external radiotherapy, brachytherapy, nuclear medicine, and medical oncology, founded by Professor Nikos Zamboglou. It's based in Agios Athanasios, on a site overlooking the city and coastline.

Melathron Agoniston EOKA

Cyprus's largest private rehabilitation centre, with more than 25 years of experience treating stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, and other neurological conditions. Beyond rehabilitation, it runs outpatient departments in neurology, physical medicine, cardiology, and clinical laboratory services, and is connected to GESY. It's based on Eleftherias Street in Palodeia.
